I want to reinforce/further some of your points: Using WIMA MKS02 or KEMET R82 film capacitors for 4.7uf and below is absolutely the best course of action; yes, they cost a little bit more, but they''ll last essentially forever and they''re just better; I don''t hesitate to use United Chemicon, Kemet, or Cornell Dubilier for larger filter capacitors if they''re

View moreI had a bad experience with a can cap change to a JMP 100 watter.. didn''t need the change at all as there was nothing wrong with the caps (1980jmp). View moreI replace every other cap 1000uF and smaller. For filter caps, I make a judgement call, as, IME, the failure rate on well-treated filter caps is low. Otherwise, I think the caps are ticking time bombs, especially since electrolytic capacitors are the only device in vintage HiFi circuitry with a ''best by'' date assigned by the manufacturer.
View moreReplacing electrolytic capacitors is one of the most common ways to repair (and maintain) vintage electronic gear. This article will explain what these capacitors do and discuss a few different approaches for replacing them. What are Electrolytic Filter Capacitors?
Replacing capacitors requires some basic tools and safety equipment. Here’s a list of what you’ll need: Soldering Iron: A quality soldering iron with a fine tip for precision work. Desoldering Pump or Wick: To remove old solder from the board. Screwdrivers: To open the amplifier’s casing. Pliers: For gripping and bending leads.
Second only to power cords, capacitors are the most failure-prone components in old radios and televisions. In a professional overhaul, it is common to replace all of a set's large electrolytic capacitors and small paper capacitors. This article explains how to do that.
When a new piece of vintage gear shows up in my shop – the first thing that usually gets checked (and replaced) are the large electrolytic capacitors in the power supply stage. Usually, these are large silver multi-section can capacitors.
Some techs will advise to wait until the component fails before you replace it. I like taking a preventative approach since capacitor failure can be harmful to other components as well. My personal rule of thumb is to replace all electrolytics in gear that was produced before 1970.
Another option to consider when replacing electrolytic capacitors in your gear is to purchase modern axial capacitors with high voltage ratings. Axial caps in particular are useful in power supplies constructed on turret boards, common on vintage guitar amps.
