View more100,000 pF is 100 nF, not 100 μF. replacing that capacitor will not fix a broken motor, all that capacitor does is prevent radio noise. @Jasen The motor is fine, all the mechanical parts just needed a drop of oil and it went no problemo.
A run motor capacitor will wear down differently, making them a bit more complicated when trying to determine if it needs to be replaced. When a run capacitor begins to perform outside the allowable range,it is usually indicated by a dropping of the rated capacitance value.
The reduction in capacitance causes a drop of current in the start winding, which reduces the starting torque at certain rotor positions. This also has a side effect of reducing the power output of the motor, and creates a fluctuating rotating magnetic field within the motor which causes increased operating noise.
As a general rule of thumb, a run capacitor will far out-last the same motor's start capacitor. A run motor capacitor will wear down differently, making them a bit more complicated when trying to determine if it needs to be replaced.
Start capacitors give a large capacitance value necessary for motor starting for a very short (seconds long) period of time. They are only intermittent duty and will fail catastrophically if energized too long. Run capacitors are used for continuous voltage and current control to a motor's windings and are therefore continuous duty.
A universal motor doesn't have a start or run capacitor like some AC motors The capacitor is in the foot pedal, which makes it more likely it is for arc supression. The value on the capacitor amounts to 100 nF. You'll need a capacitor rated for more than the AC line voltage - 300VAC is a common rating for such capacitors.
