[Photo by YAO FENG/FOR CHINA DAILY] A report by the International Energy Agency, or IEA, on the future of renewable energy production has pinpointed China, and in particular its solar power capabilities, as leading the way for the world in the years to come.
The location-specific identification of renewable energy sites reveals that the number of green jobs is highest in the north of China (Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang) and decreases toward the south (Guangdong and Fujian). In general, solar-related green jobs are more widely distributed and more frequently co-located with coal power plant workers.
Of those jobs, 2.76 million will be in the photovoltaic sector, 0.88 million in the hydropower sector, and 0.68 million in the wind power sector. Thus, while jobs in traditional energy industries have shrunk due to the energy transition, new energy industries are creating jobs.
Altogether, different from Lim et al., 24 who focus on fossil fuel extraction workers in the United States, this paper provides an optimally holistic picture of transitioning coal power plant workers in China to green jobs by modeling coal power retirement as well as people-centered renewable energy deployment.
