In this case, it is possible to wire the two 6V panels in series and then wire the resultant array in parallel to the 12V panel. However, the latter type of connection is at the expense of efficiency. It is therefore essential, before making a parallel connection, to carefully check the voltage of the solar panels.
You can charge a six-volt battery directly without a solar regulator, but you do so at significant risk. A solar regulator on the cheaper end is around $50. However, the regulator’s cost is minimal if you use the solar panel to charge the battery over many years.
Solar panels with a power output of 5W and 10W are ideal for slowly charging 12V batteries. They’re an excellent size solar panel for keeping a 12V battery charged, and they’ll slowly charge it up over weeks possibly months depending on the weather and battery size. Small 12V batteries can be charged quickly using 20W and 50W solar panels.
Stall current is typically much higher than the operating current. Thus, for a 6 Volt motor rated at say 1.1 Amperes maximum stall current, a minimum of 3 solar panels in parallel would be recommended, more if they are to be used in overcast conditions.
The solar panel will provide a little over 9 volts at its peak. Given that a six-volt battery is 100 percent charged at around seven volts, the pairing of the panel to a battery works when both are six volts. While that sounds good news, it is not always a good fit. Are we talking in circles? Nope, and here’s why.
