Thermal energy is stored solely through a change of temperature of the storage medium. The capacity of a storage system is defi ned by the specifi c heat capacity and the mass of the medium used. Latent heat storage is accomplished by using phase change materials (PCMs) as storage media.
The energy storage station participating in system frequency regulation is required to respond to the power demand given by the superior dispatch system within 4 seconds. Fig. 6.13 is the control strategy of energy storage system participating in system frequency regulation.
With a reinforced power grid, regional overproduction can be compensated for by energy transmission to temporarily less productive areas. The amount of energy storage can also be reduced by overinstallation of renewable energy generators. With this approach even weakly producing periods are adequate for the load expected.
Batteries and the BMS are replaced by the “Energy Storage Medium”, to represent any storage technologies including the necessary energy conversion subsystem. The control hierarchy can be further generalized to include other storage systems or devices connected to the grid, illustrated in Figure 3-19.
