On the downside, discharging lead-acid batteries to zero volts can lead to significant drawbacks. Experts indicate that this practice results in sulfation, where lead sulfate accumulates on the battery plates, thereby reducing capacity. Discharging standard lead-acid batteries to a low level can damage the plates due to shedding of lead sulfate from the plates. Thus, for best life, it it recommended that standard Pb-acid batteries be discharged to no more than 50% of it''s capacity, which is about 12V for a nominal 12.6V battery.

Lead acid batteries should never stay discharged for a long time, ideally not longer than a day. It''s best to immediately charge a lead acid battery after a (partial) discharge to keep them from quickly deteriorating.
View moreTo prevent damage while discharging a lead acid battery, it is essential to adhere to recommended discharge levels, monitor the battery’s temperature, maintain proper connections, and ensure consistent maintenance. Recommended discharge levels: Lead acid batteries should not be discharged below 50% of their total capacity.
Figure 4 : Chemical Action During Discharge When a lead-acid battery is discharged, the electrolyte divides into H 2 and SO 4 combine with some of the oxygen that is formed on the positive plate to produce water (H 2 O), and thereby reduces the amount of acid in the electrolyte.
By understanding and implementing these practices, users can effectively prevent damage while discharging a lead acid battery and ensure its reliable performance. Discharging a lead acid battery too deeply can reduce its lifespan. For best results, do not go below 50% depth of discharge (DOD).
Specific actions and conditions can contribute to the premature discharge of a lead acid battery. For example, frequent deep discharges, prolonged storage in a discharged state, or operation in extreme temperatures can exacerbate the sulfation process. Regular maintenance and following guidelines for discharge levels are vital.
It's best to immediately charge a lead acid battery after a (partial) discharge to keep them from quickly deteriorating. A battery that is in a discharged state for a long time (many months) will probably never recover or ever be usable again even if it was new and/or hasn't been used much.
Personally, I always make sure that anything connected to a lead acid battery is properly fused. The common rule of thumb is that a lead acid battery should not be discharged below 50% of capacity, or ideally not beyond 70% of capacity. This is because lead acid batteries age / wear out faster if you deep discharge them.
