In order to improve the shading performance and power generation effect of Photovoltaic shading integrated devices (PVSDs) on the west facade of buildings in China, a multi-objective optimization design method is proposed in this paper.
Taking an office building in Zhengzhou, China, as an example, the optimal configuration of the external solar shading device for west-facing PV louvers is optimized and designed, aiming to improve the utilization of solar renewable energy while reducing building energy consumption and the phenomenon of thermal discomfort.
If the geographical location of implementation is cooling dominant, the energy-saving potential of non-insulative solar shading systems remains net-positive as those climate zones experience milder winters [32, 57].
Thus, insulative solar shading technologies such as insulative roller or cellular shades would be applicable in heating and cooling-dominant climate zones. Similarly, there remains a need to develop a heating season control strategy for insulative shading to fully realize the energy savings obtainable through the technology.
Glazing treatments and smart shading systems are effective at reducing building energy consumption. A standardized energy performance quantification process is required to improve the comparability of energy savings. For cold climate applications, season-specific control strategies are required by using automated shading systems.
