Validation is the process of checking how well a model meets its goals and user needs. Our intent is for the Home Energy Model to simulate building energy use as realistically as possible. Therefore, we have undertaken a series of validation exercises to check whether this is the case, assessing the model’s performance against:
In order to compare the monitored data to the Home Energy Model, we calibrated the weather, occupancy, and space heating regime assumptions in the two models, so that they better represented the actual conditions. In this case study SAP 10.2 runs (both calibrated and uncalibrated) were carried out alongside the Home Energy Model runs.
The accompanying technical documents are there to provide further explanation, as well as supporting evidence, for different aspects of the model. This should significantly improve transparency and understanding among the Home Energy Model’s different audiences, as well as facilitate scrutiny and peer review.
