In this model, PV technology is no longer confined to traditional power plants but is integrated with agriculture, construction, transportation, communication and industrial manufacturing, creating a comprehensive, efficient clean energy network. Similarly, some researchers have previously estimated China's solar PV potential. Yu et al. (2023) utilized multi-criteria decision mode and random forest algorithm to calculate China's large-scale and distributed solar PV power generation potentials in prefecture-level cities.
Province-level solar PV supply curves in China were constructed. PV technical potential was estimated around 39.6 PWh to 442 PWh. The uncertainty of PV technical potential was quantified. The cost of PV ranges from 0.12 CNY/kWh to 7.93 CNY/kWh. China's PV economic potential far exceeds its projected electricity demand.
Furthermore, many studies have shown that China's solar PV technical potential far exceeds the country's total electricity consumption, and a small fraction of it can make a significant contribution to China's energy transition.
In this study, by utilizing the outputs generated by CMIP6 models under different shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) and a physical PV model (GSEE), future changes in PV power generation across China are provided for the outlined carbon neutralization period (2051–2070).
