Europe has seen its first year when energy storage deployments by power capacity exceeded 10GW in 2023. The eighth annual edition of the European Market Monitor on Energy Storage (EMMES) was published last week by consultancy LCP Delta and the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE).
Over the years, new technologies for storing electricity were emerging, which have led to a variety of storage systems today, all differing in the application, costs, and profitability. It is forecasted by International Energy Agency (IEA) that global installed storage capacity will expand by 56% in the upcoming years .
We added 9% of energy storage capacity (in GW terms) by 2030 globally as a buffer. The buffer addresses uncertainties, such as markets where we lack visibility and where more ambitious policies may develop that we haven’t predicted. We revised our buffer calculation methodology in this market outlook.
Last year’s record global additions of 45 gigawatts (97 gigawatt-hours) will be followed by continued robust growth. In 2024, the global energy storage is set to add more than 100 gigawatt-hours of capacity for the first time.
Residential batteries are now the largest source of storage demand in the region and will remain so until 2025. Separately, over €1 billion ($1.1 billion) of subsidies have been allocated to storage projects in 2023, supporting a fresh pipeline of projects in Greece, Romania, Spain, Croatia, Finland and Lithuania.
